I style men for a living – Here’s what I think you should wear this fall
By Melissa Slavick, Head of Styling at Taelor, leading a team of experts who have styled over 10,000 men
Fall is the season where style finds its voice. As the air cools and the days shorten, it invites you to step beyond summer minimalism and add depth to your outfits. Bringing respite from the hot weather, the changing season lures you to think beyond light carefree looks to embrace layers, textures, and richer tones in your wardrobe.
When I’m styling my clients, I help them understand the nuances of fall dressing—how a single layer can transform an outfit, which fabrics feel substantial without being heavy, and how to balance colors so you look confident without trying too hard. I guide men through subtle choices—like the right overshirt for a brisk morning or the perfect tonal pairing for an evening out—so every piece in their wardrobe works harder and smarter. It’s not just about looking good; it’s about dressing with intention, ease, and impact.
The great news is you don’t need to be a fashion obsessive to pull it off. With a few sharp choices, your fall outfits can project confidence and ease without taking extra time in the morning.
What kind of clothes do people wear in the fall?
Autumn wardrobes are all about adaptability. Start with basics like crisp denim, tailored chinos, and simple knit sweaters. Then add flexible layers—overshirts, shackets, and vests. These staples make your fall clothes work for fluctuating temperatures and multiple occasions.
The difference in 2025? Small but meaningful updates. Cuts are more relaxed without being baggy. Outerwear is practical but lean, designed to layer without bulk. That’s how you strike balance between comfort and style.
What is going to be in style for fall 2025?
This fall, I’m seeing key pieces that bring both comfort and character to a wardrobe. Bomber jackets layer effortlessly over casual or smart outfits, rugby stripe polos add a nice sporty edge, and plaid flannel shirts bring texture and timeless appeal. Jeans are moving toward looser, more relaxed fits, which feel modern and comfortable without looking sloppy. A reliable pair of chinos or dark denim gives structure while a corduroy overshirt or knitted cardigan adds visual interest.
I’m also seeing more experimentation with textures: corduroy over wool blends, brushed flannel against denim. These combinations create a fall style that is understated, and quietly confident. A wardrobe that feels contemporary but approachable. I help my clients see how to combine these styles in ways that feel intentional, flattering, and suited to their everyday lives—creating a subtle shift without shouting for attention.
Why is fall the best season for fashion?
Fall gives men the freedom to experiment. A single outfit can shift through the day with a scarf added in the morning, a blazer swapped in for afternoon, or a lightweight jacket for evening. That fluidity makes fall outfits exciting.
It’s also about depth. With richer tones and tactile fabrics, your look gains a kind of visual weight that summer can’t offer. Dressing well feels effortless in autumn because the season naturally elevates your style.

What colors to wear in fall?
This is where men often second-guess themselves, but it’s actually straightforward. Stick to the deep autumn color palette and the soft autumn color palette.
The deep autumn color palette is bold but grounded—charcoal, rust, deep teal, and chestnut. The soft autumn color palette is subtler—sage, muted beige, soft gray, and dusky rose. Together, they let you shift from commanding to approachable.
A charcoal jacket with a sage knit beneath? Refined and modern. A rust overshirt with soft gray trousers? Confident yet relaxed. These tones make your fall clothes versatile while adding quiet sophistication.
What fabric to wear in the fall?
Autumn fabrics should feel substantial without being heavy. Think midweight flannel, merino knits, corduroy, denim and twill. Each material adds texture, depth, and function. A ribbed cardigan under a cropped coat, or a flannel overshirt with tailored trousers, instantly makes fall outfits feel more deliberate.
The idea is to mix tactile fabrics so your fall designs are not only stylish but also comfortable. The best fabrics for fall are those that give you warmth and structure while layering seamlessly.

The essence of fall dressing
The spirit of fall style is straightforward: refined utility, mixed textures, and richer colors. Build your wardrobe around adaptable pieces, layer textures with intent, and lean into the autumn color palettes. Choose clothes that not only suit the weather but also express understated confidence. With layering, texture, and thoughtful color at your disposal, autumn becomes the season where you don’t just get dressed—you define your style.
